CONTROLLING KIDNEY WORMS IN SWINE IN THE SOUTHERN STATES

    Get PDF
The kidney worm of swine is one of the most serious obstacles to profitable swine. production in the. South.. Since these parasites are located in the liver, kidney fat, kidney tissue proper, blood vessels, and other parts of the body outside the digestive system, they cannot be removed by any known medicinal treatment. The only hopeful outlook for the control of these parasites is a system of management designed to protect hogs from the infective larvae of the worms. These larvae develop from eggs eliminated with the urine of infected hogs. (Fig. 1.) Larvae of the kidney worm are prevalent on hog pastures in practically all the Southern States

    INTERNAL PARASITES OF SWINE

The Hog is generally considered to be a dirty animal. Experience shows, however, that given a chance to graze in a clean pasture and sleep in a dry, clean place, it will do so, thus growing faster and making a better profit for its owner. This bulletin is written in answer to inquiries, largely from swine owners who find evidence of infestation with parasites in hogs they slaughter on their farms. It is designed to tell them how to identify most of the common parasites and how to prevent such infestations. In some parts of the United States hogs are so seriously infested with internal parasites that meat packers make deductions from the prevailing market prices to offset losses due to the necessary elimination of damaged parts. Swine owners who take special precautions to prevent infestation of their young pigs should reap greater profits from their animals by being able to raise to market age more pigs from each litter. There is also a saving in feed; healthy animals mature and fatten on less than is needed by parasitized pigs. The following publications of the U. S. Department of Agriculture give further information on the internal parasites of swine: Leaflet 34, Trichinosis: A Disease Caused by Eating Raw Pork; Leaflet lOS, Controlling Kidney Worms in Swine in the Southern States; Leaflet llS, Controlling Lungworms of Swine. Other Department publications discuss the external parasites and bacterial diseases that affect swine

A Case Study of Problems and Possibilities in the Establishment of a Guide Training Institute in Uttarakhand, India

This project sought to explore the problems and possibilities experienced during the establishment of a guide training institute in Uttarakhand, India. As originally proposed by the Mountain Shepherds Initiative, a small tourism organization based in Uttarakhand, the aim of the guide training institute was to provide participants with the knowledge and skills needed to gain employment as guides within, and expand the extent of, high quality/low quantity birdwatching tourism within northern Uttarakhand. This project was undertaken in conjunction with the Mountain Shepherds Initiative and the problems and possibilities were identified during a six month stay in the region from May-November, 2010. The problems and possibilities identified concerned the potential for the expansion of birdwatching tourism within the region as well as the process of establishing the training institute. Problems and possibilities associated with the potential for expanding birdwatching tourism within the region were related to three destination-attributes identified by Scott and Thigpen (2003) as of primary concern to birdwatchers: species availability, infrastructure, and contrast to urban environs. Problems and possibilities identified in connection with the process of establishing the guide training institute related to the means by which sites were selected, the creation of a course curriculum, and the initial implementation of guide training through a pilot course. As the tourism industry grows, and guides are held to increasingly high standards, it is hoped that this exploratory study will both inform other organizations wishing to establish guide training programs as well as future research into guide training

Secure web proxy resistant to probing attacks

Secure web proxies are popular for sending internet traffic via alternative paths. Access to a secure web proxy is typically password protected. A malicious third party that does not know a username or password can detect a secure web proxy server by attempting a connection and observing a distinctive response from the proxy server, e.g., an HTTP 407 Proxy Authentication Required response. Traffic from clients that utilize web proxy servers that are detected in this manner can then be blacklisted. The techniques of this disclosure enable secure web proxies that are resistant to probing attacks. The output of distinctive signals by the proxy servers is limited to authorized clients by making use of a secret key known only to such authorized clients
